String Quartets

Post by klavierelch »

The first chamber music thread is - shock, horror  - dedicated to a combination of instruments totally without piano: the string quartet.

As a starter here is an old, but now cleaned scan of the Second String Quartet by English conductor and composer Eugene Goossens ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugene_Aynsley_Goossens) which now is out of print.

York Bowen - String Quartets

Post by fredbucket »

The good folks at Sibley produce huge quantities of very good string quartet music but this one drew my attention and I thought it would be good to post it here.

Pity that the Frank Bridge are parts only. I intend borrowing every bit of Frank Bridge I can from London libraries and scanning it. He was a genius; no other word for it. One of the very finest composers the UK has ever produced.

Totally agreed. I would love to see more of his scores.

Toward the end of our last (third) incarnation I scanned three of Bernard van Dieren's extraordinary String Quartets

van Dieren 1917 op9 String Quartet 2 fs.pdf
van Dieren 1919 op15 String Quartet 3 fs.pdf
van Dieren 1927 String Quartet 6 fs.pdf

I still have them in my Rapidshare account link for anyone that missed them:

Thanks for the full scores of Bridge's late quartets. They are probably the best British quartets written so far; great music in any case.

As stated in Alfor's thread on the piano forum, I recently found Melkikh's 2nd quartet, op. 18. If someone wants to scan it in for everyone, I'll gladly send them a xerox of the score. The piece was composed in 1928 and printed in Moscow in 1930.

I don't have a copy yet, but I wanted to know if anyone would be interested in Kabalevsky's String Quartet no. 2, op. 44 in G minor. The item is another Soviet publication from the 1940s that is 143 pp. long (large for a miniature score, but the work is 35 minutes long :ugeek: ). If this or the other quartet by Kabalevsky has been posted before, someone please let me know.
