Re: Russian & Soviet Composers - Part 3

Post by mballan »

Caostotale posted a number of works in this series, and I hope to fill a few gaps over the next week or two. The Concert Pieces by Soviet Composers series ran to about 16 numbered volumes, but there were also a number of additional volumes depending on the publisher, location, date and/or editor. So you could have four Volume 6s, each with different works within them. For example, I have 5 different versions of Volumn 4 - and another one posted below !

All of these were new to me, so likely also new to members.

Translation of titles will be included with each volume.

Thank you, Malcolm. I seem to have a different volume also called "Concert Pieces by Soviet Composers Vol 4" which includes Nikolayev Toccata, Bubarov Poem, and Yorovsky Gigue from a ballet. This was posted by a certain Alfor a while back. I don't know my volume is mis-numbered or this is a different series by the same name.

Hi Fleubis

This is what I was trying to explain above - your copy is correct, its just that there were different series / publications of 'Concert Pieces by Soviet Composers' depending on date, publisher, location etc. As I said I have five x Volume 4s all with different pieces in them. So you could have a volume showing the publisher was Muzyka 1977 Leningrad, and a different volume also labelled as Vol. 4 and the publisher was Muzyka 1977 Moscow - both volumes with different works held in them. It does make it difficult to catalogue, the important thing is to check the actual works in each volume, not just the title / number of the volume.

As I said, these volumes are new to me, so I expect will be new to all Pianophilia members.

For those who can read Russian, the site for Concert Pieces by Soviet Composers is https://ale07.ru/music/notes/song/forte ... oncert.htm. The different versions, which are easily downloadable, are listed under the publisher ("Muzyka" or "SK", which stands for Soviet Composer).

Another way of finding the scores is to enter the name of the various volumes in Russian: Концертные произведения советских композиторов.

If you explore ale07.ru, you can find a wealth of scores for different types of music, e.g. foxtrots, tangos, popular pieces etc.

Thank you Pianino - I quite agree, and would encourage members to explore some of these wonderful sites if they can read Russian (although suspect the majority can not). I just see my task as saving time and effort, and providing copies of these works and translations of the various albums shared on these sites. I also eliminate any works that have already been shared on Pianophilia by Alfor, Caostotale or myself, amongst others.

Two works tonight.

Two further volumes from the Concert Pieces by Soviet Composers series - both labelled Vol. 5 !!!! One by Muzyka dated 1985, and the other by Soviet Composer dated 1977. Think this helps to illustration the confusion that can come from this wonderful series of rare Soviet piano work !

Thanks for these, Malcolm. Your Moscow Vol. 5 is one that I posted a la carte a while back, but it's always good to see alternate scans. The latter volume is of particular interest, as I really like what I've heard of Ovchinnikov and have quite a bit of curiosity about the music of Zinger (which, according to another score, is Russia's transliteration of 'Singer') and Savintsev. I found quite a few works of Zinger's a while ago (piano sonata, piano concerto, cello sonata, string quartet) and a string quartet of Savintsev's.
