..Insightful commentary, though apparently not by Cortot but still good, and a well fingered edition by the master...

I am quite sure that every word of the commentary has been written by Cortot himself!!

This is a late Cortot edition - first published in 1959. He refers to the Henle edition of the Brahms Sonatas, which was first published in 1956 (!), edited and fingered by Walter Georgii*.

*who provided some re-arrangement suggestions for tricky spots, which in later reprints have been ommitted!

Is there a scan of the earlier prints?? I suspect my Henle is a late reprints!

A different harmonic context here with the Arnau pieces. Google turns up nothing about him, so he is apparently somewhat obscure. These pieces have happily found a home in my new file. Thanks for these, Alfred.

As French is not one of my languages, I cannot tell much about who wrote what commentary, but I can say they may both the Brahms Variations and this Sonata seem to have had the same English translator. So I'm no help. The English version of the Chopin etudes is far less stilted than in this much later edition of the Brahms, so a different translator, I'd guess. I'm always very delighted to find any new Cortot editions, as I have almost no quibbles with the analysis or the fingerings. In my case, without such guidance, I am prone to place too modern an interpretation.

I do not have it at hand. I could not find it on my shelves - maybe I only saw it in a library.
It is the first edition from 1956. The currently available edition is from 1984.

Ah, the return of some Genuine Alfor Scans! And, in a classy hires PWM edition, too. Very easy on the eyes (especially on the computer screen atop my piano). PWM has always been my primary Chopin edition and is well known as a quality edition, but I am quite unfamiliar with their other publications such as these.

What an interesting find the Bartholoni Impressions are, Alfred. Hugely varying in character, they present a pianistic smorgasbord of ideas and are quite aptly titled as impressions. I especially like the many recitativo sections liberally sprinkled throughout giving sharply defined contours to the more energetic sections.
