A Godowsky pioneer:
Doris Pines plays Godowsky (details see Cover)
It was this LP disc which inspired the foundation of the

Re: Alfor's Rarities - Recordings
This file definitely dedicated to fleubis:
Artur RUBINSTEIN
CHOPIN Sonata op. 35
recorded in 1946 (probably an early tape recording)
first issued on shellac (the long-playing-record was not yet invented!)
This file is from the first LP issue (RCA LM 9008, early 1950s)

Re: Alfor's Rarities - Recordings
Alfor, this is a real treat! With Rubinstein I can enjoy the music without being so awed by technique, as in Horowitz. It's a matter of architecture and Rubinstein's arches triumph.
Thanks for uploading this outstanding performance! It is definitely edgier than his later performances.

To my knowledge there are only two other „official“ recordings of Chopin's op. 35 by Rubinstein: The 1964 live recording* from Moscow and the studio stereo recording from roughly the same time. Imho the latter has a much less genuine sound than the 1946 recording.
*I do have the original Russian Melodiya stereo and mono issues of this recording - which might also be worthwhile to post in this thread.

Re: Alfor's Rarities - Recordings
Rubenstein playing Debussy: Very choice morsels indeed. Thanks much for this, Alfred. I'm delighted to hear what early Rubinstein is like. I continue to admire the overall arch of his conceptions. I wish I could find the right words to express my impressions of these early performances, but alas, I'm at a loss for words.
