Do Salabert specialise in the most awful printing one can find? We need a thread somewhere for awful publishers (I have several in mind!!!). ...
Billaudot would be in this elusive circle - but this modest editor gave as the opportunity to see Alkan's challenging compositions at a time when others didn't at all. So we should not be too severe.

I remember my dear father reporting that he paid a personal visit there in Paris some 30 years ago to buy my first opp. 35 & 39. He was served by Monsieur le Patron himself.

What would we collectors do without enterprises like this one? No collecting, I'm sure. Good print quality is possible but expensive - and it shouldn't be taken for granted.

I think the following composer needs little introduction – and is personal favourite of mine……..Henryk [Genrikh] Albertovich Pachulski. Born 1859, Łasy, near Siedlce; died 1921 Moscow. Polish pianist, pedagogue and composer. In Warsaw studied piano with Strobl, and composition and music theory with Moniusko and later Zelenski. Later he continued his studies in Moscow and graduated 1885 from the Conservatoire where he was a pupil of N. Rubinstein (1880), Pabst for piano, and Arensky for composition. In 1886 he was appointed professor of piano at the Moscow Conservatoire and remained there until 1917. He was never returned to his native country. As a composer followed in the traditions of Tchaikovsky and Taneyev. Despite a fairly slim number of works he has become well know to many pianists for his exquisite and sensitive piano pieces, although until recently few of his works had been ever recorded [1st volume of piano works released by Acte Prealable]. Works list:

Op 1 Variations on an Original Theme (Jurgenson 1894)
Op 2 Deux Pieces (Jurgenson) 1. Morceau de Fantaisie 2. Intermezzo

Etude in Db major

Transcriptions:
Arensky: La Coquette from Suite “Silhouettes” Op 23

Moniuszico: O Matko moja & Mia madre [song transcriptions]

Tchaikovsky: Hamlet Fantasy Overture arr. Piano / 4 hands
Melodie Op 73 No. 2
Symphony No. 5 in E minor Op 64 [piano solo version]
Symphony No. 6 “Pathetique” Op 74 [piano solo version] (Noël)
Valse from the Serenade for Strings Op 48
Zelenski: Masovienne & Polonaise from the Suite Op 47]

A number of his piano works can now be found through Sibley Library and IMSLP [Op 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11 #1, 12, 13, 16, 17, 19, 20, 21, 22, 24, 26, 27 & 29 #1 and the Octave Etude].

Various works by Pachulski have been posted on the old Pianophilia not included above and I have re-posted them here for completeness [my thanks to those individuals for their scans]. I also recently posted further rare Pachulski scores on the old site……and include them here again. This covers Op 9, 11bis, 10nms, 18, and 23.

Also included are some new scans of works I believe have never been shared before – Op 3 No. 3 Impromptu, No. 11 No. 2 Etude and Op 29 Nos. 2 Prelude & 3 Elegie [again I have posted the complete opus for completeness]. And my apologies, these are A3 size scores done on my A4 scanner, and the pages were somewhat yellowed, but generally the scans are quite clear and readable. Otherwise this should all but complete the piano works for Pachulski.

Still to be discovered [unless someone kindly has the scores and can share] are Op 13, 15 and 25, all orchestral works transcribed for piano solo and/or piano / 4 hands; and the very elusive Op 31 No. 1 Prelude. Plus the two solo Etudes with no opus number [I did have these once along with the Op 13 Prelude from the Suite, so they are out there somewhere].

Jeremy......thank you. I am collecting photos of our more obscure composers, and didn't have one of Pachulski.....very much appreciated.

Maybe we should start a composer galley ?

Thanks very much, Malcolm.

The Op.1 No.2 Prelude is such a lovely piece.

And being fairly easy to play, it's perfect for amateurs like me.

(not asking for scores) I am asking an opinion, had anyone seen the latest PWM edition of complete piano works of Szymanowski, is it different from the Universal edition???

I have no access of PWM, and if i have to order, i just want to be sure that it is not reprint of UE. And please let me know how is the editorial work for this edition.
