Ernest Haberbier (1813-1869). German pianist and composer. Studied with his father, an organist; then left home in 1832 and went to Russia becoming a court pianist in St Petersburg in 1847. Concertized in London in 1850; then in Paris in 1852, and finally settled in Bergen in 1866, just 3 years before his death. He wrote a number of effective piano pieces of which his Op 53 Etudes-Poesies [25 etudes] are the best known and available on IMSLP.

Here are his lesser known set of Eight Etudes-Poesies Op 59.

Unlike me, this is short and beautifully formed.

Gustav Merkel (1827-1885). German organist and composer. Studied organ with Schneider, and theory with Otto: he was also aided by Schumann. He was organist for several churches in Dresden, and taught at the Dresden Conservatoire from 1861. He primarily wrote a number of organ works...........although on this occassion, I have posted one of his few piano works - the Op 70 Polonaise.

Hello parsonstreet,

Many thanks for posting the Loeschhorn collection! That is a really nice find. His music seems very hard to come by. Only a few sets of etudes are available as far as I know, and that's a shame considering the large output from this composer. Your work in scanning the folio is very much appreciated. :D

All Best,
