Der Name Felix vom Rath (1866 -1905) findet heute vor allem im Zusammenhang mit Richard Strauss Erwähnung, zu dessen engsten Freunden er gehörte. Vom Rath entstammte einer begüterten rheinischen Industriellenfamilie, was ihn zeit seines Lebens materiell unabhängig machte. Nach einem Jura-Studium betrieb er kompositorische und pianistische Studien bei Max Pauer, Carl Reinecke in Leipzig und G. Sgambati in Rom. Sein Freund Max von Schillings vermittelte ihm Privatunterricht bei Ludwig Thuille in München, wo er seit 1893 lebte. Seine Wohnung wurde zu einem Treffpunkt für Musiker und Literaten. Eine mit Richard Strauss und Schillings projektierte progressiv ausgerichtete Musikzeitschrift (Lisztzeitung), für die Korrespondenten aus den Musikmetropolen Europas gewonnen werden sollten, so auch Gustav Mahler in Wien, kam nicht über das Planungsstadium hinaus. Ludwig Thuilles Klavierstück op. 37, Nr. 1, Threnodie, ist dem Andenken des Freundes gewidmet. Vom Rath hinterließ, nicht nur wegen seines frühen Todes, ein schmales Œuvre. Zeugen seine ersten Kompositionsversuche noch von der Aneignung Brahms'scher Einflüsse, fand der Unterricht bei Thuille seinen ersten Niederschlag in der im vorliegenden Band edierten Symphonischen Dichtung Nachtstück nach einem Gedicht Alberta von Puttkamers. Abgesehen von dem einsätzigen Klavierkonzert in b-Moll op. 6, mit dem vom Rath überregionale Bekanntheit erzielte, komponierte er vor allem Lieder und kurze Klavierstücke.
