Music and art

Post by soh choon wee »

Dear Resourceful Members
I am compiling two lists of music (not necessary piano music): (a) Music that influence an art work (be it paintings, sculptures, prints or even performing art) and (b) Art-wrok that influence a piece of music.

For (a), i have no entry yet. I vaguely remember a piece of work by Andy Worhol that was inspired after he heard Steve Reich's composition. But there must be many others.
For (b), the immediate three pieces that comes to mind is Mussorsky's Pictures from Exhibition, Debussy's Sunken Cathedral and (of course) La Mer.

Thank you for all contributions.

My sincere thanks

two for (b) which spring to mind are Rachmaninov The Isle of the Dead (Bocklin) and Liszt Totentanz (Orcagna)

Here's a useful but non-exhaustive list of music inspired by art:-

As for art inspired by music, that is more tricky, apart
from paintings of musicians playing instruments of which
there are many, and album covers. However, Berlioz seems
to have been fairly fruitful:-

How about Disney's "Fantasia"? Or the hilarious send-up, Bruno Bozzetto's "Allegro non Troppo"?

If I recall right, Kandinsky made some paintings after hearing a concert with Schönberg's String Quartet op10 and the Piano Pieces op11.
Ars opus est hominis, non opus artis homo.
