It would be nice if more than just Tim have a go, we are at this moment more like Hamilton and Rosberg!

I'm sure you mean Waldorf and Statler.
Ooh that was nasty!! haha! but at the speed we work at I will stick with Hamilton and Rosberg, unless you know someone even faster than us!

Here's a quick quiz. The anagrams are of composers,
all of whom have a couple of things in common.

1. Bitter men jab inn. (8,7).
2. Reward glade. (6,5).
3. Brewer's hot hell. (7,7).
4. Salt mailshot. (6,6).
5. Tail willow man. (7,6).

Hi Tim,
that was rather easy even for you, less than two minutes without the use of paper.
1. Benjamin Britten
2. Edward Elgar
3. Herbert Howells
4. Thomas Tallis
5. William Walton

Apart from being English I don't know what else they have in common, apart from their first and surnames all starting with the same letter, which would be the link knowing your devious way of thinking.
cheers

Hi Brian,

You got it - these are five alliterative English composers.
I was surprised by the relatively high number we Brits
have had.

Btw, on another music forum I occasionally look at, Walton
is generally regarded as Britain's greatest ever composer.
I'm not at all sure about that!

Regards, Tim.

These worthless surveys over "the greatest ever..." what a waste of space on a forum. Those surveys can be so easily manipulated that before you know it you could vote for your favourite composer of all time as the very worst of all time all depending on the questions asked and the facts and information supplied for you to make your choice.
Walton is a fine composer but please let he/she who wants to, enjoy what he composed without having to worry if their pleasure is misplaced or "correct" because some idiot somewhere put him at the bottom or top of their list.

Yes Brian, I'd tend to agree with that. The same site decided that
Mahler was the greatest ever composer, despite him only being a
specialist in one genre. Elsewhere, I've seen Rachmaninov given
that accolade, despite all of his compositional short-comings.

The word 'greatest' can only really be applied to who has made
the biggest musical impression on the individual concerned during
his or her lifetime, which is a deeply personal thing, and has very
little to do with the relative merits or otherwise of the composers
themselves.

Not so easy as I thought because of No.4 which brought Eugene Goossens immediately to mind. However I soon realised it was "Poke her loo jobs" and thanks to that I found out he had written a whole load of songs on poems of Blake (The Songs of Innocence) so I learned something new and found something which is on my list to find. I will wait before I supply the answers and hope someone else will do it.
cheers Tim

Well done, Brian. It's curious how the composer sometimes
used 'f' instead of 'ph' at the end of his first name.
