Yes indeed! I would add Elgar's Third Symphony in the brilliant edition by Tony Payne. There are of course several fine 'completions' of the Bruckner, Mahler, Mozart & Puccini. I only know one completion of the Schubert, though there must have been more.

That was part of my thinking in creating this thread, but really I was after completely hypothetical works - works that their composers were actually suited to writing. So for instance, for Mahler I suggested a Violin Concerto rather than a Piano Concerto since his long flowing lines would be rather more suited to violin writing than piano writing. Mahler is a 'horizontal' composer and Bruckner a 'vertical' composer, so for Bruckner I suggested a Piano Concerto.

Anyway, the idea was that putative works should be imaginable and believable, and in a form not attempted by the composer in his/her maturity.

I love this thread, Rob. There's a lot of music I've yearned for, like the passacaglia to Janácek's sonata...

My personal favourites are those classic gems, the Mozart cello sonatas.

The Mozart Cello Sonatas would certainly have been from his early forties. Maybe even a Cello Concerto from his fifties.

I'm beginning to believe in parallel universes! After all science has always told us that if it is imaginable then it is probably true. Anyone know a wormhole we could use to syphon these works though to our existence from dimensions where they have been created? 8-)

I suspect that when scientists tell us about parallel universes or multiverses, they are actually talking b*ll*cks! ;-)
Here are few works, which only exist in a galaxy 100 quintasquillion light years away.
Brahms's Clarinet Concerto, Cello Concerto, and Symphonic Variations.
Haydn's 2 Piano Quartets and 6 String Quintets.
Mozart's Concerto for Piano and Violin (doesn't a fragment actually exist on planet Earth?).
Schubert's Violin Concerto and Piano Concerto.
Spohr's Piano Concerto and Concerto for Flute, Harp, and Violin.
Tchaikovsky's Piano Quartet, Piano Quintet, and String Quintet.

Seems to me that Brahms did write symphonic variations.

Indeed - I was thinking of the finale of the Fourth Symphony.

There are also orchestrations of the two Clarinet Sonatas, one by Luciano Berio which is particularly fine.

Whilst agreeing with Walter and Rob, what I really meant was separate original works
in those genres, with their own opus nos., not movements from or arrangements of
existing works. The Symphonic Variations by both Dvorak and Parry are both fine
stand-alone works. Also, Berio's orchestration of Brahms Op120 No1 is matched
by an equally fine (imo) orchestration by Rainer Schottstädt of his Op120 No2.
Of course, other interesting Brahms orchestrations include Rubbra's orchestration
of Brahms's Handel Variations, and Schoenberg's orchestration of his Piano Quartet No1.

Yes the Parry is wonderful, though I'm not a huge fan of the Dvorak set.

Yes, Rainer Schottstädt - I have it - I couldn't be bothered digging the disc out.

The Rubbra orchestration is very fine, but the Schoenberg is a work of utter genius, thoroughly convincing until he throws in the kitchen sink (well, a xylophone actually, if I remember correctly) in the zingarese finale - a brilliant touch.

I'm glad you know all these Tim - I wish a few more gifted composers would do for some of the masters what these clever men have managed.
