thanks for the links, I have a lot of what they are offering but there are quite a few new items like the Sonata by Andrews. The Rowley is also new to me and as he always writes serviceable music (no pun intended) well worth exploring.

The Elgar is of course one of the "classics" I have been playing it for years, it is written for a British organ of three manuals and pedal with thumb pistons absolutely essential. It can also be played on large continental organs but you will need stop-pullers in attendance. Elgar prescribes something like 60 or more changes of dynamics and about 40 changes of manual in the first movement alone, it is a very orchestral style movement, presumably that is why Gordon Jacob thought it could be orchestrated.

For those who don't know, Elgar was the organist at the St. George's Catholic Church in Worcester and after the service would run as fast as he could to the Anglican cathedral in order to hear the organists closing voluntary there, so he knew how to write for the organ, that is why it is a real swine to perform, he knew what he wanted and he wasn't taking prisoners, poor old Hugh Blair just couldn't learn the whole thing in a few days, irrespective of the stories about him being drunk when he played the premiere.
Just a thought, no-one has ever made a piano transcription of the organ sonata, now that would be interesting to hear, any volunteers out there?

Interestingly, the draw knobs on the console have an 'E' for the stops which were on the original organ Elgar played. St. George's is still a reasonably active church with a noon Mass during the week.
