That was a fantastic concert with a fantastic program and a fantastic pianist. Too bad that the audience was so scarse. Jonathan Powell was kind enough to introduce in French the pieces he played. He has a point in common with Glenn Gould, which is humming loudly during the pieces, especially when he plays with the score (Ullman, Friedmann). My favourites were the romantic Feinberg, the heroic Blumenfeld, the enthusiastic Goldenweiser and a superb and quite energetic rendition of the Alkan (better than the one heard on the radio during the Montpellier festival). And the lovely encore, petit poème, by Krein. Jonathan Powell is very good at making the different voices of the score very clear. I did not care too much for the Malher transcription by Friedman, although it was carefully played.
I have listened to the two records I bought, Goldenweiser and Krein; they are very good and highly recommendable. I am glad that the technicians have managed to take all the humming away because this would have bothered me (I don't mind it live but I hate it in recordings, like in Gould's ones).
