Vladimir HOROWITZ
plays
Dimitri KABALEVSKY
Sonata No. 3 op. 46

Charming sonatina-like work; one of K.'s best achievements, imho.

From original shellac set.

Thanks very much for this Alfor, and I agree with you, it is probably one of his better larger scale (form) works ( though I personally feel more drawn to the sound of the first two more lately). I learned and performed this a couple years ago upon my return to formal advanced study and it was immensely enjoyable to put on the stage. I will enjoy giving this another listen and welcome the interpretation to my archive.

Although most people will gravitate more strongly to the lyrical first theme of the first movement ( I actually like his "war" music part of the the first mvmnt more), I feel the best music is found In the last. His use of "Kalinka" is so fun ( and bonus points for any keen ears that can name another K. piano favorite that also makes good use of that very "Russian" theme... ;) )!

Fine HOROWITZ recordings from around 1960:

Chopin Sonata op. 35
Rachmaninoff: 2 Etudes tableaux
Schumann: Arabeske
Liszt ed. Horowitz: Hungarian Rhapsody No. 19

Very authentic sound, no rustle or crackle!!! This from an original reel-to-reel tape!!

Fascinating recording by Conrad HANSEN on an original „Tafelklavier“ from Mozart's time.

MOZART: Piano Sonata K 331

From original LP recording from the 1950s.

If you ever touched an instrument like this you may appreciate
the extremely perfect and refined finger technique present in this recording.
Amazing that the fur-covered hammers are producing an almost mandolin-like sound!!

I am really surprised that they didn't take the dead mice out first, I hope the owner wasn't arrested for cruelty to animals!

I had the opportunity to have a look at the instrument in question and I can assure you that Hansen DID remove all mice - whether living or dead - each time before playing the instrument ;) .

Arthur Schnabel plays Beethoven's Diabelli Variationen op. 120 (rec. 1937)

(Not from the original shellac set but from a good LP transfer)
