Thank you Caprotti for what is a very good performance of my favourite composer's VIOLA CONCERTO - NOT the Violin Concerto as you had stated (I have amended your post). I swear the announcer says Violinkonzert - she is wrong.

This work means a great deal to me - I have known it for over 40 years, and it was 'born' the same year as my mother! The soloist plays beautifully. But I have a few comments:

The opening is actually too slow, although very beautiful. It needs to move just a little more. In general the first movement is played as though the soloist is still too fragile after a broken love affair - so it sounds too full of self-pity. That's not really what that movement is about - it is about longing - the Germans have a wonderful word for it - Sehnsucht - it is dreamy and wistful but with rather more courage than is shown in this somewhat self-pitying performance. There are a few ensemble problems between orchestra and soloist in some of the awkward tempo changes, which is a great pity.

The Scherzo could do with a bit more ooomph, but sparkles nevertheless. It should be much naughtier!

Not all British music is derived from what we call the cow-pat school of composition, epitomised by Vaughan Williams et al. The conductor and soloist should think a little more about Hindemith in this piece. Tertis, for whom it was written, didn't understand it (probably too angular in places), so it was actually Hindemith who gave the first performance - though I'm sure I read it was rather an inadequate performance.

Much of the finale in this performance similarly needs to be taken at a brisker pace except where the soloist is obviously reminiscing about the past. I would have had one of the horn players shot for not understanding his or her crucial solo! The finale is about resolve if it is about anything - the certainty that love will return. And this performance does ultimately get that right in the rapturous coda. An extraordinary work for a composer so young - he started it when he was just 25.

Yes it was a mismatch between what had been indicated in the web written program and what the announcer says.
And Tamestit is one today's best viola players !
