Vocal Music from Russia & the Soviet Union

Post by caostotale »

Seeing as this volume covers composers from at least three other threads, I decided to start a new thread, one to which I hope to link several more volumes over time. I hope this is not in bad form, but I don't think Armenian composers belong in a 'Russian song' thread or vice-versa in a Caucasus thread.

Here's one of a large number of voice/piano volumes that was published during the Soviet era. Like many other 'Sovetskikh Kompositor' issues, this book covers a pretty vast geographical scope, including composers from Tajikistan (I had always assumed Balasanyan was simply an Armenian composer) and Armenia, and setting words from authors of Turkmenistan, ancient Japan, Spain, Kalmykia (a nation that lies north of Dagestan; the Kalmyks are the western-most group that adheres to Tibetan Buddhism), and the not-often-heard-from Caucasus region of Kabardino-Balkaria (the Balkars are a Turkic group). All in all, a deeply interesting volume.

Here's an interesting volume that compiles various songs on the words of Alexander Blok, an important Russian poet from the early decades of the twentieth century. If anybody can shed some light on what the footnote on page 3 (poorly translated below) is referring to, I'd be interested to learn more. As can be seen from the examples of Gnesin, Shaporin, and Veselov, many of these are just selections from larger Blok song cycles. Otherwise, it's a very interesting mix of composers. Shcherbachev I'd heard of as a teacher to later composers like Boris Arapov and Revaz Gabichvadze. Gnesin is, of course, the brother of the three sisters who founded the music academy which bears that name. Shaporin was an important figure in early Soviet musical theater and taught several composers, including Rodion Shchedrin. Sviridov was a neoromantic composer who wrote a ridiculous amount of songs, choruses, and orchestral works that made him very popular in the USSR. Salmanov studied under the aforementioned Gnesin and went on to compose quite a bit of material after WWII, including a cycle of six string quartets which just recently saw republication and recording (on Northern Flowers, I think).

Romances on the Poems of Alexander Blok, for voice and piano (1975)

Note on pg. 3: 'from the extensive music "Blokiany", in this book are just a few songs by Soviet composers, arranged in chronological order, from the beginning written by his wife-to-date.'

Vladimir Vladimirovich SHCHERBACHEV - 'Do not sleep, do not remember...', op. 11 (bio at http://translate.google.com/translate?h ... 6bih%3D989 )
Mikhail Fabianovich GNESIN - 'No one will say: "I am mad" ', from the A. Blok song cycle, op. 16/3 (1915)
Yuri Alexandrovich SHAPORIN - Wind Brought from Afar, from the song cycle 'Distant Youth', op. 12/4
Johann Grigoryevich ADMONI (Germany) - Savory Spirit of the March, from the vocal poem 'Circle' (bio at http://translate.googleusercontent.com/ ... MdMiyUY1Cg )
Vadim Nikolayevich SALMANOV - Song of Ophelia (bio at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vadim_Salmanov )
Georgy Vasilyevich SVIRIDOV - 'As a farewell, a passionate vow...', from the cycle 'Petersburg Songs'
Georgy Vasilyevich SVIRIDOV - 'We met with you in the temple...', from the cycle 'Petersburg Songs'
Vladimir Ilich RUBIN - 'Everything, that memory is trying to save me...', from a small cantata on the poems of A. Blok
Vladimir Ivanovich TSYTOVICH - 'Terribly cold evenings...' (bio at http://translate.googleusercontent.com/ ... KH127XmuDQ )
Vadim Fyodorovich VESELOV - Sound Approaching (bio and mp3s, including this song, at http://translate.google.com/translate?h ... 6bih%3D989 )

We've seen some works by this member of the Krein family in the Scriabinists thread and elsewhere. A look at his bio ( http://translate.googleusercontent.com/ ... f9IIOl1Avw ) shows that he was quite the prolific composer and musicologist. I'm particularly interested in hearing more of his chamber output, especially the six string quartets (the last of which has been shared here and the others of which I've not yet seen or heard of). A recent Naxos CD included the first available recording of his viola sonata, but aside from that, his recorded legacy is very limited. Anyhow, this volume is one of many that were published in the Soviet Union that compiled selected songs from specific composers' overall oeuvres. I'm not sure when the songs were composed or whether or not they come from larger cycles. All that aside, it's great to see some more material from this interesting composer.
