Here's one of the later string quartets by the prolific Myaskovsky student, Yevgeny Golubev. According to Onno van Rijen's page, he composed a total of twenty-four which, to my knowledge, is an unmatched amount of quartets for a composer post-1900. Also included in this volume is a set of solo viola works written in tribute to Dostoyevsky. Very interesting stuff. The publication came out in 1985, but it's likely that the works were written between 1982-1984.

Here are a number of short Soviet-era works for quartet. We've previously seen some other short works by Birnov and Znosko-Borovsky in this thread and a couple of Raukhverger's full-sized quartets (nos. 1 and 2 of a total seven he wrote). Alfor previously shared Akhmetov's piano sonatina.

To my knowledge, this composer wrote a total of four quartets and embraced more and more avant-garde composing techniques as he went forward. Also highly-recommended is a saxophone quartet piece dedicated to the memory of German author Hermann Hesse, which is actually available as a CD or MP3 download through Amazon:

Here's a short quartet piece by a Oleg Komarnitsky, a composer who wrote a lot of accessible, high-quality pieces during the second half of the twentieth century but died quite young and fell into obscurity. His music was recently given a big push by Toccata Classics with the following CD release:

http://www.toccataclassics.com/cddetail.php?CN=TOCC0196

One can look at the liner notes of that release (available for viewing on the web page) for a very well-written biography of the composer. A few of his piano works for young players can be found in the Russian/Soviet thread.

According to his bio (see the above post with his 'Basso Ostinato'), this composer wrote a total of three numbered string quartets. I've not found any info on the latter two.

Tkach was not only Moldova's foremost female composer, but a massively prolific composer as well. Unfortunately, not much of her music is available in the West. Pianist Alexander Timofeev has edited and released a few volumes of her work, including a delightful book containing 50 children's pieces, mostly based on folk styles.
