Music for Oboe, Cor Anglais or Bassoon

Post by fredbucket »

Two of the more difficult instruments to play, but nonetheless a unique sound. Interestingly, the English Horn as translated here is neither English nor a horn, but I suppose that's one of the glorious illogicalities of music.

Ravel to start off with - an arrangement of the Pavane pour une Infante Defunte for Cor Anglais and piano.
Ravel - Pavane pour une infante défunte (trans. Piguet - English Horn and Piano).pdf
and the Sonata for English Horn and Piano by the prolific but nonethless very important Paul Hindemith.

Thanks for these, Fred.
Most probably the instrument was originally named "cor anglé" which was then developed into "cor anglais".
Ars opus est hominis, non opus artis homo.

Except my understanding is that there is no word "anglé" in any European language?

It should be French for "angled" or "angular".
