Progressive Art Series Publications

Post by Oberon Smith »

I am hoping members here might be able to help me. I own a number of beautifully edited piano solo music from the "Art Publication Society" also know as the "Progressive Series" and sometimes the " Progressive Arts Series". I seem to recall that at one time, a teacher had to be registered to get this music. It was not sold through music store channels. Here in the USA, it was "Art Publication Society" St. Louis MO., cw 1913.....maybe we could start a catalog of music we collectively own and share.
Thank you in advance Oberon Smith

There is a large (654pp, 66MB) file on Scorser that claims to be the complete Godowsky pieces/editions from the APS series.

http://en.scorser.com/Out/4785757.html

There were a lot published from the teens through the 1960s--Worldcat shows almost 1300 entries, no doubt with some duplication.

Thank you! But the selection is not complete, merely focussing on the editor Godowsky.
There were other editors like Emil Sauer.

I think "complete Godowsky pieces ... from the series" makes that clear.

I wish to Thank the responders here, for this thread that I started. I find myself a bit ashamed, I was hoping to share and post my copies of this publisher, but find the ones I own, are already posted. I have other pieces by this publisher, but, they are the beginning student level, though edited by Von Sauer, and the composers are/should be assigned to oblivion. I hope members here will look at the wonderful Schumann Romance, Chopin/Liszt, Liszt, and Beethoven, these have to be the best editions I have ever encountered. Surprisingly, and questionable in taste, are the two transcriptions by Godowsky,... humm.... the Kreuetz Sonata and the Violin Concerto.... yikes... yikes yikes... LOL

a red faced, Oberon Smith

I found this Sarabande by Gardner Read as published by APS and gave it a quick scan:
