Are you sure it's a part of f minor quartet? Borodin seems to have written only 2 quartets, none of them in f minor... And they don't have any allegretto...
There are two other mysterious pieces transcribed for 4H, maybe from this "f minor quartet": a Tarentella (in D) and a Polka (in d minor). Have you heard about a third quartet?

Dear Malcolm and Mouchette,

I think you'll find that this music is the Trio from the
Menuetto and Trio of Borodin's extraordinarily beautiful
String Quintet in F minor of 1853-54.

The Marco Polo CD of it is still available, which also includes
his Piano Quintet and his Cello Sonata. I highly recommend it!

Thanks Tim & Mouchette - sorry I confused matters, I will amend the main entry.

The Polka, Marche funèbre, Requiem and Mazurka for piano / 3 hands all come from 'Paraphrases: 24 Variations & Finale' a collaboration between Cui, Lyadov, Borodin, Rimksy-Korsakov, Shcherbachyov and Liszt. A copy can be found on IMSLP.v The theme is a version of what is often referred to as 'chopsticks'.

Borodin also wrote a Polka and a Tarantella for Piano / 4 hands as well (the Tarantella is also available on IMSLP, and can post the Polka if required)?

No worries Malcolm. Serge Dianin's biography of Borodin gives
more background to the 3h piano work, on pages 247-9, but
it doesn't refer to the String Quintet at all, except on page 334,
where it's mentioned in his list of works. Interestingly, it states
that the Trio is in F major, so the 4h piano arrangement had its
key changed for some strange reason. It's very curious that a
major chamber work such as this is ignored in Dianin's book,
whilst the minor piano work is given 3 pages!

I would suspect this is an arrangement by the Duo performing this work...............I have not come across any version of 'Dark Eyes' for two pianos ala Liszt, but an enjoyable romp
