I hope we all post concertos that we do not not often find or play

Thanks Oren for starting this important thread. We can easily have other carefully defined threads on Piano Concerti - there are a lot of them about! ;) For instance:
  • The Baroque Keyboard Concerto
Piano Concerti from the Classical Period
    Modern Piano Concerti
Concerti for Two Pianos or more
or similar titles... Any takers?

Svetlanov Piano Concerto in C minor

Post by phikfy »

Is there any chance for the captioned piano concerto? This is just ultra romantic with floods of melodious extravagance.

Hi Koon

I have been hunting a copy of this concerto for years...with no success yet. I was once informed that it was never published and held only in manuscript by Svetlanov's family [but not sure if that is true or not].

I keep hoping......one day !

Judging by comments in the 'Polish composers' thread it seems there would be an interest in an update on the Hyperion Romantic Piano Concerto series. Strictly speaking, this should go in the recordings thread, but in the past this thread was much more active and on the old board we used it for discussion of the recordings as well as general score posting etc., so I hope the mods don't mind if I continue in this way.
Anyway, we've been quite busy lately, I don't think there's ever been a time when so many projects are 'in the can' or booked in the recording schedule. Here's where we are at:
Vol.49 - Stenhammar concertos 1 & 2, (Seta Tanyel) (Nov. '09 release) First time both concertos have been coupled together, it's turned out really well.
Vol.50 - Tchaikovsky 3 concertos and Concert Fantasy, (Stephen Hough) (April '10) A blockbuster for the 50th, but I suppose too popular for you lot!
Vol.51 - Taubert concertos 1 & 2; Rosenhain concerto, (Howard Shelley) (Aug. '10)
Vol.52 - J. Wieniawski & Goetz concertos, (Hamish Milne) (Nov. '10)
Vol.53 - Reger Concerto; Strauss Burleske, (Marc-André Hamelin) (2011)
Vol.54 - Widor Concertos, (Markus Becker)
Vol.55 - English repertiore, being finalised this week I hope. (Martin Roscoe)
Vol.56 - Pixis Concerto plus something else (Howard Shelley)
Vol.57 - Wiklund Concertos (Martin Sturfalt)

More Polish repertoire is definitely on the cards and will probably go to Jonathan Plowright who seems to have become the specialist there. I'm having a beer with him on Monday so perhaps we'll knock something up! Howard Shelley is also playing the Dobrzynski in Poland, so we may end up recording that as he's gone to the trouble of learning it, though it's not one of the best. The Lessel is the obvious coupling, though as you mention, that's been done.
Another priority is more French repertoire and I'm in discussions with a fairly well known French pianist about tackling some of that. Even after fifty volumes the potential seems almost endless so, as long as sales hold up, we should get around to most of your favourites eventually.

+1 !!

But oh, the thought of having to wait until 2011 for the Widor concertos? Possible for a scan of the 2nd so some us can get a head start in studying it?

Anyway, many thanks, Mike, for giving us a preview of your upcoming releases.

Sweet list, Mike. Thanks very much.

Looking forward to the Pixis and especially the gorgeous Goetz 2nd.

Oh, and I'd love to hear the Dobrzynski!

His Nocturnes are quite lovely.

Here is the Widor 2nd concerto. The original score was an absolutely foul copy which was very brown and crumbly (does anyone know why French music was printed on such incredibly poor paper?), hence the scan is not as 'clean' as I would like. It's also one of those annoying '1 piano' scores with no orchestral reduction; nobody else but the French still did this in 1905!
