Something especially for Frank, and no doubt of curiousity for Alfor. We have all had considerable difficult in obtaining this score but thankfully the Moscow State Library came to the rescue.

Enjoy.

Malc, thanks for all your trouble in obtaining the Akimenko Op 44 Sonata. It has been well worth the wait to get this very satisfying and hugely interesting piece. The holes in our Akimenko collection are gradually getting filled in.

Dear Malc,

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!! :D :D :D I was beginning to think we'd never see this masterpiece!!! This piece of music has haunted my conscious (and probably sub-conscious) mind ever since I first heard it; from a midi file that I downloaded through one of the Russian music sites going on 10 years ago now. It is an extremely powerful, dramatic and above all exciting piece of music and (imho) one of the greatest works of this extraordinary composer.

Seeing this score for the first time tonight is the greatest thrill for me. I will be burning the midnight oil staying up late tonight with this one!

Again, many thanks for your tireless efforts on behalf of Russian Piano Literature. You are making a contribution to the arts which is truly meaningful and ever so important for us as well as future generations. I also want to thank dear Alfred for his help in trying to obtain this devilishly elusive score. Accomplishments like this is what makes Pianophilia the wonderful site it is.

From your ecstatically happy friend, all the very best,

Frank :D

No worries Alfor....I was going to look to see what else the Moscow State Library had by Akimenko but was in a rush yesterday [found the score by chance during my lunchbreak]!! Although I think we have all the other Akimenko scores, I would add the scans by the MSL are usually extremely good.

They are starting to scan some of their holdings based on requests....the difificult bit is getting the request accepted !!! I can only hope that more scans by the library will appear in time and I will keep an eye open. The only main problem in checking the library, which I have used quite extensively for my "book", is you do ideally need to be able to use Russian [they accept English but 'search' is quite limited].

I was just happy that I was able to find this score for Frank, who I knew was very keen to locate a copy, as well as share with fellow PP'er as well :D

Malcolm
I tried some succesful searches (BTW only about 1/3 is marked green = downloadable for everybody):
Use the right top column: "Belaieff", "Jurgenson", "piano", "fortepiano", "Sonata", "Variations", "Rahter", etc. and you will get a lot of interesting results. You can also search by composer's names. Alternately you can search with russian letters (words): I do copy the words I need (Google or whereever I can find them).
Best regards, Alfor S. Cans

It is possible to order it now.

Walter, thanks for the heads up on this outstanding recording. I got my copy today and am very pleased with Ms. Shkoda's work here. It's performances of this caliber that will help bring back into prominence nearly forgotten composers like Kosenko.

These sonatas really highlight the composers amazing fluid chromaticism. I hear a strong Scriabin influences, but Kosenko clearly has his own voice.
