A little more Chugunov: "Harmony in Jazz Piano" - a method book/anthology (in Russian). This comes from Boris' site--originally a zip of a 156 multi-page tif file that I converted to PDF.

caostotale wrote:This could belong on the jazz/stride thread, but he was trained as a classical pianist first. I'd be interested if anyone could help in finding his set of 24 preludes...as well as the set of 24 by Yury Alexandrov:

Yury Nikolayevich CHUGUNOV
Jazz Pieces, for piano (pub. 1990)

including:

Impromptu (1980)
Nocturne (in the fashion of George Shearing) (1974)
Unheard Cry (1980)
Fantastic Visions (1978-84)
Monologue (Thelonius Monk), from the suite 'Jazz Portraits' (1981)
Reminder (1984)
In Memory of Bill Evans (1981)
Troubador (1988)
Sonata (1969-70)
Chugunov - Jazz Pieces, for piano (pub. 1990).pdf
(NMS)

Regarding the Alexandrov, do you have any idea who published the set of 24? I'm coming up blank on this. Using this spelling:

Aleksandrov, IU. M.

I found a number of his scores in Worldcat. There is a Prelude and Fugue published by Muzyka in 1966 listed. I wonder if this is the same a the "Preludes & Fugues (Muzyka 1966)" from Malcolm's list?

Jim F., the Chugunov preludes are really interesting and quite varied. I am puzzled by the notation seen on page 6 of the score. Now what should one play here? :?: Are we to make up our notes in a sudden accelerando? I've occasionally written aleatoric notation in my own scores, I've not seen this before.

Anyway, Chuganov has a whole lot of interesting ideas that I find refreshing. Thanks for posting these preludes.

Good find--and yet another spelling interpretation of the composer's name in Worldcat.

I believe that's the proper transliteration for American libraries...it's what I've used in looking for pieces by Anatoly Alexandrov as well. There's no Russian letter that directly represents the letter X.
