Nikolay Vitalyevich Lysenko. Born 1842, Hrynky, near Kremenchug; died 1912, Kyiv. Ukrainian composer, ethnomusicologist, conductor and pianist. As a child, began his piano studies with his mother, and even at this early stage became fascinated by native Ukrainian music. His education continued at Kyiv Conservatoire from 1860-64, the Leipzig Conservatoire to 1869 and later the St Petersburg Conservatoire where he studied composition and orchestration under Rimsky-Korsakov (1874-76). He returned to Kyiv in 1876 – it should be noted that his Ukrainian patriotism developed early in his life and his political activism was no less acute than his musical nationalism. In 1904 he founded the Music-Dramatic School in Kyiv, where he encouraged Ukrainian musical art to flourish. For the 1905 revolution he wrote the choral work “Vechny revoyutsioner” [The Eternal Revolutionary] to a text by A. Franko. Lysenko was particularly inspired by the Ukrainian poet Shevchenko, and was determined to create a true Ukrainian opera in his own language and using national material. He wrote operas based upon stories by his fellow countryman, Gogol – most notable the heroic-historic opera “Taras Bulba” (1880-1890) whilst his most popular is the opera “Natalka Poltavka (1889). In addition to composing, Lysenko collected, arranged and published over 600 folksongs from 1868 to 1911 and also wrote several literary treaties concerning Ukrainian folk music. Yet, despite his achievements his music is rarely known outside of Ukraine.
