Bohuslav Martinu

Post by rob »

Bohuslav Martinů - December 8, 1890 to August 28, 1959

With single composer threads, anything at all related to that composer may be discussed and posted.

Martinu wrote six mature numbered symphonies:
  • 1942 H289 Symphony 1, in memoriam Natalie Koussevitsky
    1943 H295 Symphony 2, for Szell/Cleveland
    1944 H299 Symphony 3, for Koussevitsky/Boston
    1945 H305 Symphony 4, for Ormandy/Philadelphia
    1946 H310 Symphony 5, for Kubelik/CPO
    1951-3 H343 Symphony 6, Fantaisies Symphoniques, for Munch/Boston75
but there are three orchestral works that followed in the 1950s which were symphonies in all but name:
  • 1955 H352 Les Fresques de Piero Della Francesca (Symphony 7), for Kubelik
    1957-8 H367 Parables, St-Exupery/Neveu (Symphony 8), for Boston
    1958 H369 Estampes (Symphony 9), for Louisville
Here is my recent scan of the last of these works, the extraordinary and lovely Estampes.

Rob, thanks for giving Martinu his own thread and throwing in a score in the bargain. Yahoo!

Here is something that some people should find interesting. I posted it on RapidShare due to it's rather large size. I might be able to get other such related goodies. Stay tuned!

Thanks jre. This is probably the Martinu symphony I listen to most often, even though it probably isn't the best. I love the scherzo. My favourite performance is by Martin Turnovsky, but I haven't heard the newish Belohlavek yet...

Did anyone ever locate a scan of the Martinu concerto for two pianos?

IMSLP is planning to release a lot of stuff on or after January 1st 2010, since that will be the New Year 50 years after his death in 1959. We might wait until then I guess and see what happens. I would think it would be high on their list.

I especially like the 1st of his symphonies. The second movement is a fantastic rhythmic and wild dance.

Hello folks, I'm anxious to see a copy of Martinu's triple concerto (piano, violin & cello). I will, of course, order it but a promoter wants an answer immediately and I don't know it form a bar of soap... I'd be very grateful if anyone has a scan they could 'lend' :)
