Alexander MacFadyen was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1879. Pupil of Ganz, Arthur Friedheim and Felix Borowski.

Made his debut with a orchestra on 1905. Composed a number of songs and piano works (hope to post an etude by him shortly). Taught at the International Conservatory in New York and the Wisconsin College of Music. Died 1936.

His Sonata is dedicated to Josef Hofmann, who performed it to great acclaim.

Dear Malc,

Thank you for all the wonderful piano gems you have treated us to today! The MacFadyen Sonata sparked my memory of a Concert Etude by the same composer, (the score I've probably had for over 40 years). Here is it attached, I hope it proves to be a new find.

All best,

Frank

Richard Cumming 1928-2009

Happened to hear a performance of Cumming’s 24 Preludes this week-end and discovered that Cumming died in November 2009. His cousin, Edward Cumming, wrote an affectionate eulogy here:

I would appreciate very much some info on the following sonatas by US-american composers (perhaps all are copyrighted, some are still in print).
Are they worth investigating?? Anybody able to comment?

Finney several Sonatas
Floyd Sonata
Walter Kaufmann Sonata
Best regards, Alfor S. Cans

Carlisle Floyd is still with us, according to Grove, and so uploading his works here is not possible. Ross Lee Finney died in 1997, which is probably too close to the present day for us to consider a major effort, but I am uploading a handwritten score of his Sonata No3 as a taster, as it were.

What about Mieczyslaw KOLINSKI (1901-1981)?
Anybody who can comment on his piano works (2 sonatas, 4 suites, etc.)
Best regards, Alfor S. Cans

I mentioned Swan Hennessy (1866-1929) back on the Etudes thread - here is his Album Celtique....which is a collection of four separate works all based on Celtic themes:

1. Variations on on original theme in an Irish style Op 12
2. Eight Celtic Pieces Op 51
3. Sonatina Celtique Op 58
4. Radsodie Irlandaise Op 67

- you get you money's worth from me and Mr P :D
