A little some thing for the weekend....although not for the faint-hearted ;)

Eugene Kapp (1908-1996) - Estonian composer - his 'Sea Moods' Etude from 1928 (one of his earliest works). As Kapp only died in 1996, this is an example of his music (not aware this is still in print but please let me know if an issue). Kapp is well worth exploring, as wrote in a lush romantic vein.

Heino Eller (1887-1970) Estonian pianist and composer.

Although there is quite a number of works by Eller available on-line, this set was new to me, and hopefully other members too.

Sometimes called the Estonian Suite, English translation of titles:

Estonian Suite – Six Pieces (1941-47)
1. Dance of the Billy-Goat (1946)
2. Circle Dance (1946)
3. Folk Tune (1947)
4. Horn Tune (1946)
5. A Folk Tune (1946)
6. Dance Tune (1941)

Thank you for the nice Eller piece, Malcolm. Charming little character pieces.

These pieces are recorded on Vol. 1 of the Toccata Classics excellent ongoing series dedicated to Eller's piano works.

Anyone with the Elēģija of Jānis Ķepîtis? I'm not finding any reference to this as either a single work or part of a collection. I've included the link to a recording by Vilma Cīrule below. (Many fine recordings can be found on that channel.) Thanks.

I did find a mention of an Elegija in A flat major (no later than 1948) in a list:

http://www.lmic.lv/core.php?afftor=&nam ... =%D2&l=%DE

Janis Kepitis "Pieces for Piano", published in Riga in 1948 (Jānis Ķepītis. Skaņdarbi klavierēm. - Rīga: LVI, 1948).

However, there is something very confusing here.

Vilma Cīrule calls these pieces 6 Miniatures, and the Elegy is #1. The other five pieces from the set (Joy, Evening Song, Unrest, Sadness, and Consolation) are in fact from Seven Mood Pictures (Noskanu Gleznas). Elegija is not among the seven. (The score of Mood Pictures was posted here about 2009. I can't find a link, but thanks to the generous person who posted these lovely pieces.)

Is she using the term 'miniatures' descriptively? Then why capitalize it, and why not give them their correct association?

She calls Consolation #6; it's No.7 in Mood Pictures.

Consolation:

Thanks for your interest.

The poster of the Mood Pictures was none other than Malcolm. You'll need to use the diacritics in your search, i.e., Ķepîtis.
download/file.php?id=6331

The term miniatures is being used descriptively and may or may not be from the artist. The Elegy being played appears to be in A-flat major so is likeley the one in the collection to which you referred.

Thanks again.

Do we have a scan of the Two Musical Pictures, Op.2 of Vladas Jakubėnas? Here's a YouTube video with a scrolling score - I've not seen a scan.
