Dear Pianophilians,

It is my great pleasure to share with you a long hidden gem. Charles-Valentin Alkan, Fantasticheria No.1 in B minor (1868)!

I found the score to be documented in the paper catalogue of the State Library of Berlin, asked them if they still had the aforementioned work or if it was destroyed during the wars and - after a positive response - commissioned a digital reproduction. According to § 2 lit. b of the library's statute, both I and everyone else is free to use the sheet music (https://staatsbibliothek-berlin.de/en/s ... n-services).

All the best!

Robin

Thank you very much, WalterNiemann. IMSLP has "Chapeau bas", styled "seconda fantasticheria" but lacks the original one that you provided.

That is true, Jean-Séb! Apparently, Alkan composed two of these Fantasies for piano, the second one definitely being the more elaborate and advanced piece. What I always find intriguing about Alkan, is his use of different bar lines to make a apparent distinction between the different sections of a piece. This is very clear in the present piece where he carefully divides the theme into groups of four bars. One can even see the different levels of subdivisions (entire 8-bar sentences end with a thick bar line).
